For those of you that have been dabbling with Facebook, Lingering with LinkedIn and Toying with Twitter, I encourage you to jump in!  The benefits of establishing your online relationships to take offline will contribute greatly to your network, both personally and professionally, as well as for the success of your business.  Below are my top 12 Twitter tips for those of you who are new to this social media platform.

  1.  Set up your profile and make it public.  To connect with others you need to be found so there is no point setting your profile to private.
  2. Choose a name that allows you to be found. Think of what others may search for when trying to find you. Your business name or your own name would be perfect.
  3. Fill in your location; the city you live in. (Add cities if you are virtual or mobile.)
  4. Make your avatar a.k.a photo, YOU! Photos are best as they add a face to the name and personalize the online experience.
  5.  Add a short bio.  Your aspirations, business, and any details you wish to be known for and found by.
  6.  Choose your URL.  For example: http://twitter.com/EMomNowVan  or handle as is @EMomNowVan
  7.  Follow slowly and let your following grow organically. Unless you have already investigated a number of followers you would like to mass follow to start.
  8.  Align your business with those that you would like to do business with and share business with. Share with others and learn from them.
  9. You don’t have to follow everyone!  You are the one reading the tweets in your feed when you open up Twitter.
  10.  Pay attention to others tweets. “Listen” first, then engage by @replying.
  11.  ”RT” or ReTweet as you like.  If there is room to add a comment on why you like what you are sharing then do so!
  12.  Feel free to send out links back to your own blog and topics of interest. Tweet your latest post to update, share around, and draw interest back to your own website.

There really is so much you can do with Twitter.  These are are just a few tips to get you started.  I hope to see you there!
