Remember the musical “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying”? It suggested that we can go a long way on ambition. Ambition, clarity and focus are all important ingredients for business owners.
But what if you encounter obstacles, distractions, or too many things to do? So much for ambition! There’s not enough time. And your life gets in the way. And maybe, like me, you’re a mom with multiple goals and lots of moving parts and priorities to your life. Fear not. Here’s my formula for easy and connected business building that is ‘right for you’ from my mompreneur perspective. Think S-A-M.
S is for Sequence: There is an order to things. You can rush and build things quickly but if the foundation isn’t solid, your structure will not last. In fact, when we are impatient we invariably make mistakes and the entire process takes longer. Take the proper steps and put things in place in the right order. Slow and steady isn’t about being painfully slow. It’s about taking the time to ensure that you are doing things in the right sequence.
Your entire picture may not be clear to you right away but operating methodically in sequence will help you get clear one step at a time.
A is for Action. Stay in action and stop stalling. Or worse yet: starting and stopping. What you do consistently and habitually is much more important and impactful than what you do once in a while.
Break big things into small steps that are easy to act on. Set big goals but be conscious that you attain these goals one action and one day at a time.
Setting goals that aren’t attainable or over thinking the whole process get us off track. KISS. Keep it simple Stella! Plan ahead. Block off space in your calendar for the tasks that need attention and stay committed to your schedule.
It is equally as important to say “NO” to things as it is to say “YES” to sticking to your priorities and schedule. Honouring the time booked for you and your business is critical for your success. Without time to consistently take your steps, even if it’s a half hour 3 x week, you will not have the momentum needed to move forward and will soon be in overwhelm.
M is for Meaning. Stay connected to what’s meaningful about what you’re doing. What motivates you? What inspires you? What kind of life do you want? Is it all about work? Is it about providing for your family? Is it about making a difference? Is it about connections or being a role model?
Take the time to write down what is really meaningful and important to you about your work and revisit this list often. The mundane takes over when our daily actions are not tied to the bigger picture and consistent with our values and the deeper meaning behind why we are doing what we do. Focusing on the “WHY” will provide clarity, direction and answers when you need it. .
Sequence Action Meaning = How to build your business with less effort and less stress. In a way that is right for your life, your needs and your family. Consistent use of SAM principles in your daily routine will create lasting effects for your life and your business rather than fleeting results.
