The New Year is always the perfect time to make changes in your life and business, and create better practices for yourself throughout the year. We’ve pulled together some New Year’s Resolutions for Business Owners. Take a look for some goal inspiration, as well as tips to have your business running in tip-top shape this year.
Improve your business’ filing system
If you’re anything like me, you probably had wonderful intentions last year when it came down to organizing all your paperwork. But if you’re also like me, this failed as soon as the chaos of life happened. Now is the time to improve your existing filing system, so you can organize your life. And be sure to keep up with it as you go!
For some fabulous tips on how to best organize and improve your filing system, take a look at these tips from Mind Tools. Even if you prefer to store all your documents on your computer for ease of use, take it a step further and be sure that your computer files are as organized as possible: get rid of what you don’t need, create well-titled files, make each file have a home. And don’t forget to back things up! What better way to start 2015 than with a clean, organized desk, computer desktop and life?
File your taxes early
The urge to procrastinate with your taxes may be strong. But trust me when I say that if you tackle these bad boys early, you certainly won’t regret it! Taxes are due at the end of April, and they can be so time consuming. Make your taxes a priority and you’ll be amazed with how accomplished you’ll feel. Especially when you watch other people scramble to file their taxes before the deadline.
If you’re not entirely familiar with the process of filing taxes for a small business, you can take a look at some guidelines from the Canada Revenue Agency. You can start now by making use of your brand new filing system and creating a file with all the documents you need for your taxes. Finding these forms and paperwork is half the battle. You can also find the forms you may need on the Canada Revenue Agency website. Printing these off, and understanding what paperwork and information is required, will also help you when it comes down to crunch time. Consider investing in an online software that will make filing your taxes a breeze. You can start now going step-by-step through the program and answering what you can.

Invest in your education
Make your education a priority this year by investing in your some courses, and by being open to learning new things. Whether you want to master your finances or you want to become a pro at web design, there’s always something new to learn. And learning is at your fingertips with websites such as Udemy: a database of online courses. Or, if you feel like bumping up your education with courses on web coding and design, maybe a website of tutorials and courses such as Team Treehouse is right for you. Don’t be afraid to take the leap and immerse yourself in a new subject. Choose a topic you’re interested in, and research it. Find books on the subject, read online journals or take a course offered in your community. But no matter which method of learning you choose, challenge yourself in 2015 to be the best you can be.
