Here are Some Computer Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Computer Running Well!
As an entrepreneurial Mom, you’re incredibly busy. One thing that consumes a lot of your time is your business, and much of that time is spent on your computer. You need it to work, and rely on it almost every day. Being that it does so much for you, it also has its share of problems. Here are a few tips on what you can do to resolve some of them.
The Computer Keeps Going to Sleep
Does your PC keep going “to sleep” after a short period of time? By default, Windows puts the computer into a “sleep” mode to save power. However, it can become annoying if you walk away for more than 10 minutes at a time. To turn it off in Windows 7 or Windows 8, access the Control Panel, select ‘Power Options’, and click ‘Change Plan Settings’.
There is an option for ‘choose when to turn the monitor off’. I generally set that to 20 minutes for clients. I’ve seen the default as low as 2 minutes, which can be very annoying. Under that, you will see ‘put the computer to sleep’. I always choose ‘never’. You can also tell the hard drive to never go to sleep by clicking ‘change advanced power settings’.
I have Malware on My Computer
You may see strange pop-ups, or your computer may be sluggish, so it takes longer to perform tasks, which adds up, thus costing you money.
Although a thorough System Cleanup is strongly recommended, you can run a program like Malware Bytes to get rid of some or all of the infections in the meantime. A proper Cleanup will take 2-3 hours in most cases. If a technician takes less time, it’s being rushed and likely missing important steps.
How Do I Get Rid of the Start Screen (Tiles) in Windows 8 and Put the Start Menu Back?
This is easily the biggest frustration with Windows 8. Click ‘Desktop’ on the Start Screen, then click ‘Internet Explorer’ on the taskbar, then download and install ‘Classic Shell’ from ClassicShell.net. It’s free.
There are others, such as Start8 from Stardock.com ($5), but they all basically do the same thing, and give you back the Start Menu we all know and love.
If you’re tech savvy enough to do these sorts of tasks on your own, then go for it. If you simply don’t have the time, it might make more sense to delegate the TLC of your computer and I.T. needs to a professional, who can also identify and resolve other issues and create a regular maintenance schedule, so you don’t have to worry about it.
