Who the heck are we? And why should you care?
When my youngest son was 11 months old I started my own business. Entrepreneurship chose me; after a career spent in not-for-profit management my earning potential and career prospects looked disappointingly low compared to the high financial, emotion and circumstantial cost of daycare. With only my gut to guide me I took one of the biggest leaps of my life, and began writing and editing copy for small business owners.
What I needed then and what I have tried to build today is a community of women. So many times in those first years, I needed someone to consult with – a friendly ear to commiserate with, a trusted advisor to affirm my choices or challenge me to pick new ones. I had challenges like how to register for a tax account, how to price myself to get what I was worth, how to balance workload and kidload, how to market my business and how to build one that I could find joy, pride and a healthy income in.
I needed to step out of the chaos, learn how to turn my passion into profit and find balance in my work and family life in a way that felt satisfying: I needed to redefine the juggle and get busy in business between the bells.
Enter Entrepreneur Mom Now – a mission-driven women’s learning and networking platform built on the belief in peer-to-peer mentorship. When I purchased the business in 2015, stripped it down to brass tacks, I built it back to what I thought it should be: a co-operative inspired membership of women who give and take in a wonderful community-minded system that delivers what women need to run powerful and successful businesses and families in Canada: learning and skill development opportunities, confidence, tips for better balance, and peer support. YOU need success secrets that will transform your passion into profit according to your own definition of success and fulfillment, and this in between the school bells. That’s a unique situation, and that requires a membership built specifically for you, by someone like me who gets it because I live it.
Why am I the best person to partner with you in your business? Because I am invested – this is MY life’s work – in seeing women succeed in business. Because I truly want to make a difference, one female-led business and one family at a time. It isn’t my fundraising or marketing skills, business acumen or writing ability, my network or my deep passion for the work that I do but those things matter too. It is my promise to you, what you will know when you come and hang out with me, I am absolutely committed to making sure you get the resources and support YOU need in order to build a successful, happy business.
So really, why should you care? We are looking to connect with women who are launching or growing small businesses in Canada and who are passionately dedicated to their own personal and professional growth. You want to make money, find balance and fulfill your own personal and professional goals. You want to gain the flexibility of working for yourself, to be there for your family but also to earn a profit that helps you provide for your kids. You are ready to open yourself up to professional development opportunities, and hoping to share what you know with other women too. You are a giver. You believe in the power of a female network. You should care if you are all of those things because WE ARE YOUR PEOPLE. And together, we really can make an impact.
“I am so glad I joined Emomnow. I feel like I have a solid network who I feel safe asking general business questions or specific questions related to my business. I’ve met so many inspiring women and I’ve collaborated with many of them in different ways. This is the best networking group that I’ve been able to find.”

Let me tell you a bit more about myself. My name is Karen and I am the owner of Entrepreneur Mom Now. Nice to meet you! First, I am a mother to three amazing children – Jack (8), Ellie (6) and Isaac (4). In addition to providing coaching and mentorship to the amazing members of E Mom Now, I am a writer. I have published articles and essays, as well as one book also translated into Catalan! I have a Masters degree in Comparative Literature and Art and the month that I finally handed in my research paper was the hardest of my life. I had to balance pregnancy, taking care of a 2 and 4 year old and finding time to work on my paper. I have a deep interest in supporting mothers, and women in business, in attuning my own business skills and finding new ways to increase my knowledge. I was a fundraiser and marketer for one of Canada’s largest theatre companies before leaping into entrepreneurship. In addition to the births of my three children, and my relationship with my husband, I am most proud of my academic awards and the moment when I fully embraced creating my own success door to walk through.

Entrepreneur Mom Now was formed in 2011 by CEO of Crisp Media, and hardworking mom entrepreneur Christine Pilkington. Christine’s vision was to bring together a dynamic group of women who could support each other during the early, often challenging, years of solo-preneurship with young children. The group quickly grew in Vancouver, where it was founded, and spread to Calgary and Edmonton, led by Heather Broad and Nicola Doherty respectively.
In 2015, Entrepreneur Mom Now, which had grown in online content and offline events, went through a re-birth when Karen Bannister came onboard, first working behind the scenes and then taking on ownership. With an eye towards growth, and spreading the word about the value of business networking groups for women in the early stages of entrepreneurship, Entrepreneur Mom Now is a growing community of passionate women who network online and in their community, share resources, market their businesses and access invaluable resources for maximizing their revenue.
In our dream, women feel empowered to make career choices that align with their need for personal and intellectual growth balanced with their desire to provide financially and emotionally for their families. The opportunities available to women INCLUDE roles of leadership, positions of profit, and contributions that better the economy and state of family life in our country. We support women who work with purpose, who seek emotional and spiritual contentment with fulfillment in their lives with and away from their families and who recognize that ANYTHING is possible when you think BIG.
We have grand plans for the future: to continue to create and publish engaging content in our magazine (blog posts). To continue to create a passionate and vibrant community of women helping women. But also to create funding opportunities so women can access continued learning opportunities, or the funds necessary to launch or grow their small business. We hope to bring this to you soon.
Our passion-driven networking and development group utilizes peer mentorship towards creating sustainable growth models and maximum profit for women balancing entrepreneurship and family. We have discovered the better way, and we are here to share it with you.
