My family and I just moved across country and if I were to summarize the experience in one word, it would be stressful. Moving is said to be one of the most stressful life events, and so when I started brainstorming for this article, my mind kept coming back to the concept of stress management. As I thought about how I have been managing my stress in order to keep life running smoothly during the move, I realized I have been relying on the principles of positive psychology by Martin Seligman.
Gratitude is an emotion expressing appreciation for what one has. It is also a concept of positive psychology, since it’s been found that by deliberately cultivating gratitude we can increase our happiness and well-being. Expressing gratitude for what is going well allows us to shift our attention from things we want or which aren’t going so well to more positive things. This shift in focus gives our mood a boost.
During the move, whenever I sensed my thoughts begin to shift to the things that were going wrong, I tried to pull them back to the things that were going right. This allowed me to continue to maintain perspective and not get too bogged down in the many working parts which come with moving.
The concept of gratitude can have a big impact on your business, and it can be applied in a couple ways. Firstly, stressors are easier to manage when your thoughts are positive and self-affirming. By taking a few minutes each day to jot down things that you are thankful for, both your thoughts and mood will improve and you’ll be more ready to handle any business concerns. Secondly, by expressing gratitude to clients and customers and letting them know you’re thankful for their business, you’ll be ensuring excellent customer service.
You can be grateful for just about anything. In business, this can mean feeling thankful for the new client you secured this week, instead of thinking about how you don’t have enough clients. It strengthens your self-esteem to think “these things are going well in my business,” which can in turn motivate you to work harder and secure more clients.
