Stylish. Natural. Modern. Local. Fun.
Jen MacCormack is the co-owner of Hip Baby. Located in Vancouver and Victoria, Hip Baby is committed to a more sustainable future without compromising style or fun. Customers can find great products in organic toys and clothing, meal time and bath time products and the largest assortment of in-store cloth diaper brands in Vancouver. Jen also designs Fig, an organic line of kids clothing.
What or who inspired you to start your business?
When the original Hip Baby came up for sale we had already been designing and manufacturing our own line of organic kids fashion called Fig for 5 years. Purchasing a bricks and mortar store where we could showcase this brand and compliment it with others only seemed natural.
What do you love most about what you do?
Designing! I love creating Fig, branding our store and designing cards and artwork for our stores. I also love researching and discovering new products for the store with a strict mandate of finding non-toxic, safe & well designed products that customers can trust and know will last.
How do you balance being a mom and entrepreneur?
With my daughter Charley being only seven months, I am finding that working from home has given me the freedom to be able to work in the hours she is asleep and be there for her every moment she is awake. It’s a lot to juggle but I also can’t imagine a life without design.
What single piece of advice would you give moms starting their business?
Streamline your product or service. It is better to sell one thing really well than to offer too many choices. Once you have mastered the management of your one good product or service you can think about expanding.
What place inspires you and why?
The Gulf Islands. I have been going to Mayne Island since I was born. Our cabin there has no electricity (still!) and a wood burning stove to cook on. I find inspiration in the quiet.
What makes you GO?
I think I was born going. I’m usually doing 3 things at once and I love it.
