Do you have a media & PR plan? Do you know who you’re trying to reach or what you’re trying to say? Is your media & PR working for you? In keeping with this month’s theme of back to basics, let’s take a look at a few important elements of media & PR to get your business on track:
1. What do you want your media & PR to achieve?
Are you looking for notoriety and fame or are you looking for increased sales? Are you looking for credibility or new customers? Start by being really clear about why you are looking for media & PR and what you need it to do for you.
2. What do you have to say?
One of the first things you need to figure out is what you want to say. If you had the attention of all your potential customers what is that you want them to hear or to know about your business?
3. Who is your target audience?
Who do you want your message to reach? If it’s potential clients or customers, then who is your target market? What’s their demographic? Take the time to clearly identify who is your target audience.
4. Who is your target media?
Most people have a good idea of their target audience, but not so many take the time to really think through who their target media is. Where does your target audience get their information? Do they watch TV, read newspapers, subscribe to magazines or are they getting their info online and in social media?
5. What are their needs?
Now you know your purpose, your message and where you want to get it, but rather than shouting at the media demanding their attention, start by getting to know your target media and find out what they need. Seeing how what you have to say or share fits with their agenda is far more likely to serve you well.
Going through these steps will stand you in good stead. Finding the time isn’t easy, but it is worthwhile!
