Raymie Libke Professional Corporation
Describe your business
I’m a Chartered Accountant with 9 years’ experience at a large local accounting firm, now working from home providing bookkeeping, accounting and taxation services to individuals, small businesses and self-employed clients. Working at home gives me flexible work hours, evenings & weekends are often easier for clients to meet with me when they are free. Also, clients can bring their kids with them to my place, if need be.
What or who inspired you to start your business?
My boys; Finn (3) and Sullivan (9 months). I went back to work after my first maternity leave and between the lack of flexibility, the long hours, the child care costs and the commute downtown it just wasn’t worth it. I realized that I was lucky enough to have chosen a career that I can do on my own and at any time of the day so I can be home when my kids need me.
What do you love most about what you do?
I love meeting the clients, hearing them talk about their businesses. Being able to provide a more personal approach to getting your taxes done.
How do you balance being a mom and entrepreneur?
I have a ton of family in Edmonton, thankfully! There’s always someone who can watch the boys for a couple of hours so that I can get some work done.
What single piece of advice would you give moms starting their business?
Get on twitter! Honestly I don’t know how small businesses succeeded without it. The support and exposure you can get on there is fantastic!
How do you relax?
I like to do hot yoga, run, read or catch up on my twitter feed. I just got cross country skis for Christmas so I’m looking forward to taking that up as well.
What place inspires you and why?
Our lake. I find that my mind clears and all my real life worries just fall away as soon as I leave the city and head there.
What is your biggest fear?
Failing as a mom. My “real” job can be stressful but being a mom is the hardest job I have. It’s a huge responsibility and can be so emotionally and physically draining.
What is your motto?
Do what works best in that moment. Sometimes you might have to put on the TV for the kids to get some work done, it’s not forever. We all have to let go of that so called “Mom guilt”.
What motivates you?
Doing something for myself. Taking ownership of my work. It’s my name on these financial statements, not some partner above me so I have SO much more invested in these clients.
What makes you GO?
Working coupled with the sleepless nights of having a baby can be hard. Coffee and exercise help keep me going!
