When it comes to personal style for moms who are also entrepreneurs, it can be difficult weaning out of our comfortable at-home stretchy pants, but to make an impression, we must adjust. We’ve been down a road of accommodating expanding bellies, shopping in maternity stores, then we clothe ourselves for spit up, sticky fingers, clay and crayons. By the time we are ready to pull ourselves together, we have lost our sense of style and don’t know where to even start!
Going out into the world not only as a mom, but now a business owner will require more than your best yoga apparel.
Here are some tips to help you pull together a more professional look that will have you looking polished, but still comfortable and relaxed so you can put your best foot forward!
5 Tips to Update Your Mom Wardrobe
1) Stop hiding under oversized tops. Tops that don’t fit well, and are baggy that we sometimes think cover problem areas, actually end up making themselves look bigger. If you are going with a skinny bottom then the top can be more voluminous to create balance. But a longer top or tunic should still be slim through the body. Look for tops that are made out of fine fabrics such as silks, or an asymmetrical shape that are more interesting then a regular t-shirt. Simpli, a collection made in Canada, has some comfortable pieces, including interesting draping tops that are available locally in Winnipeg, at Investment Pieces.
2) Wear the RIGHT bottoms. Pick a pant with a mid to high rise and a lot of stretch. The higher rise covers the belly which is often a problem area, and the stretch makes them comfortable but still stylish. I often recommend a skinny or straight leg so you can wear them with flats, tuck them into a boot or pair them with a high heel.
3) Add a jacket or blazer to make the outfit. For a more classic look adding a black or navy blazer is perfect. You can also go with a more trendy topper such as a fitted knit jacket or a motorcycle leather jacket.
4) Scarves. In Winnipeg, we mostly wear them to keep us warm, but scarves are a wonderful way to give your outfit a splash of colour.
