Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Pearl Angelini, and was given the opportunity to tour her incredible studio on King Street.
Pulling up to the area, I parked my car in a lot that was facing the loading docks of a brick building that was filled with history and character in the downtown area of Winnipeg. Much to my surprise, and upon double checking, I found there were no parking fees in the lot. Entering the already open door on the loading docks, I made my way up the stairs to the 3rd floor, thinking to myself how much these old buildings, the brick and beams, and large windows, reminded me of visiting clothing manufacturers back in the days when Winnipeg had a bit of a fashion district. They always have such charm to me.
Upon entering the 3rd floor, the area was vast and very open containing no reception desk or person to greet me, but it still felt welcoming, and casual. I first was met by two handsome Boxer dogs, one white, and one brown, both with friendly eyes. Then the echo of footsteps caught my attention, looking up I realized it was Pearl. Her warm, friendly face lit up in welcoming. We took the time to sit down, and she said, “Excuse the mess we are putting on the finishing touches.”
Excitement built we began to discuss what she does, and a little of what I do, and why I wanted to come see her new studio, as I could see around me that there was a heck of a lot more going on than just some meeting rooms. I had taken a good look at her website, and I originally had the idea to rent out boardrooms for our EMom Now networking meetings and workshops. You can see the rooms here:
The first one being a boardroom style and the second was to accommodate large groups; these were what I considered for our EMom meetings. One of the great things about this was the amenities that came with it, such as projection screens, in two different sized rooms – one smaller interview style room or a boardroom. The opportunities that this building offered were limited only to our imaginations.
But after I had a tour of the entire space, I realized, that this could be more than just a meeting place! Inspiration had hit me. The things that Pearl and her husband had done with the building were astounding. This was obviously no ordinary, or traditional studio. This was an artist dream, a creative playground fit for the most talented of photographers, videographers, event coordinators, artists, and models. Everything was made available, complete with changing rooms, make up tables and equipment if needed. Every studio room offering a delightfully different selection of lighting, staging, backgrounds, and atmosphere. I have provided a link here, it you would like to see each room.
Then Pearl revealed to me her 5 year plan, with the unveiling of a section not quite complete yet. More space! Large room, after large room behind each rolling door! These areas were spacious, complete with pillars, exposed brick, large windows and hardwood floors. With a little TLC, these large rooms would be perfect for artist, fashion shows, trade shows, product launches, and even wedding receptions. The possibilities are endless. Her vision came alive to me, I could see it. So much so that I think I could hear the music, background piano, conversation and imagined the people milling about the beautifully lit area. It was as if we were sharing the same vision and I was overcome with excitement for her, this was as good as anything that New York or Los Angeles had to offer, and it was right were in Winnipeg! The best part is everyone is welcome to rent space, create an event, have a photo shoot, or meeting, the boundaries are set only by your own imagination, as the rates are SO affordable! Pearl makes things easy; she has an eye for detail and can help you put together the perfect event.
After the tour, I was in awe of what Pearl and her husband had accomplished. She was kind enough to introduce me to some of her work; it was obvious that she was outstanding in her field of photography. Her love of the art shown through in all that she did, and now she wanted to share with the world, and offer a space for others to do the same.
She has created Winnipeg’s largest full service professional photography rental studio and meeting venue for visual artists, photographers and videographers. Winnipeg is a vibrant city filled with wonderful things, but we still need those with the creative energy and vision that Pearl and her husband have to get things rolling in the right direction. This is an exceptional idea that is open to all; you really should take the time to check it out, book a studio, or meeting room, or perhaps at our next EMom Now event there!
